A Papal Defense of Marriage

Pope John Paul II directed Cardinal Carlo Caffarra to establish the Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. This is a bedrock issue for the Catholic Church. The creation of man is the foundation of the Genesis story. That God made them male and female was by sovereign design. The family unit — consisting of father, mother and child — was purposed by God to be the essential core of human development and social construct.

[The Pope was scheduled to announce the creation of the Institute on May 13, 1981, but was shot by a Turkish militant as he entered St. Peter’s Square. Incidentally, President Reagan was shot six weeks earlier. The two men were Providential in the fall of Communism.]

Christians must not be timid in the midst of spiritual warfare. There are only two paths from which to choose — walking with the Lord, or walking in the world. It is the nature of people to seek approval. We want to be liked. In so doing, too many Christians compromise their faith. They have gay friends so they compromise. They have friends who drink too much, friends who commit fornication, friends who are unbelievers — and so they yield their faith for the sake of maintaining worldly relationships thus giving tacit approval of unholy behavior. Christian, get your head out of the sand. You cannot be friends with the world (James 4:4, 1 John 2:15).

In our last article we discussed the End of the Age. Quoting Sister Lucia of Fatima:

… the final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family.

Sister Lucia dos Santos was one of the three shepherd children who witnessed the Marian appearance at Fatima in 1917. The final battle was said to have been one of the prophecies revealed to the children. Cardinal Caffarra (serving as Archbishop of Bologna, Italy) received a letter from Sister Lucia (before her passing in 2005) in which she confirmed the revelation.

The war against marriage and family wages on three fronts — divorce, abortion and gay union. I say union because gay marriage is not marriage.

I am mystified at the worldwide advancement of the LGBTQQ agenda. Notice that they have added a second identifying “Q” which now represents queer and questioning. A father called into the local Christian radio station to complain about the sexual IQ test his 9-year-old daughter brought home from school.

Here’s a sampling of the questions:

  • What determines a person’s sex?
  • What is the difference between sex and gender?
  • Is a person identified by their body parts, or how they feel?
  • What is it called when a person feels different than how they were made?

The world has been brought to its knees by an orientation that comprises only .03% of the general population. This battle has escalated far beyond the original LG (lesbian and gay) movement of 50 years ago. It is a relentless assault on what God ordained. Our children are at risk. They are being indoctrinated on so many levels — television, movies, music, social media (and as early as kindergarten).

I would not have my child in the public school system.

Are you aware of #StandWithMaria? Maria’s predicament came to light on The Patrick Madrid Show. Maria is a middle school special education teacher. The school’s health curriculum requires that she teach subject matter that is inconsistent with her Christian faith.

Maria lamented,

They explicitly teach that abortion is an option, they teach gender ideology. One of the lessons that was scripted for us actually said, ‘Close your eyes, pretend you are a different gender or a different sexual orientation.’ And my heart stopped and I thought I need to get out. I cannot in good conscience teach this. But my concern is that I have 5 children of my own. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to approach this. I can’t even think about teaching it.

Maria is worried that she might lose her job either through resignation or firing. Christianity is being marginalized. It is becoming more difficult to function in a society that is growing increasingly hostile to a Biblical world view. Christians will either have to endure hardships, or compromise. For the sake of our soul, the latter of the two is not an option.

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream. Well, if you are a Christian that should not include Ben and Jerry’s which is a corporate advocate of the homosexual agenda. In Australia, the company has banned two scoop cones of the same flavor as a show of support for the legalization of gay marriage.

“So, I can’t have a two scoop cone of chocolate ice cream?”

“No.”

“But the second scoop is not really chocolate.”

“Huh?”

“Yeah, it looks like chocolate, but it’s not really chocolate. I think, today, it will be vanilla.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“Exactly.”

Cardinal Caffarra said,

… speaking again with John Paul II, you could feel that the family was the core, since it has to do with the supporting pillar of creation, the truth of the relationship between man and woman, between the generations. If the foundational pillar is damaged, the entire building collapses and we’re seeing this now, because we are right at this point and we know it.

The age in which we live can cause a doubtful person to tremble. Sister Lucia, in her letter to Cardinal Caffarra, wrote comforting words to not be afraid. The assault on marriage and family is an offense against the Lord and his bride. It is inspired by Satan.

“Do not be afraid,” Sister wrote, “Our Lady has already crushed his head.”

  1. I agree with the main thrust of this article, but am offended by the Catholic idea that, “Our Lady has already crushed his [Satan’s] head”. Genesis 3:15 tells us the offspring of Eve who will crush (better translated “bruise”) the serpents head will be a “he”, not a “she”. This point of gender is pivotal. It is the Messiah — not the human mother of the Messiah — who gives us victory over the enemy.

    1. I, too, believe that Jesus Christ is the seed of the woman who will bruise the Serpent’s head. Commentators have long debated whether the seed represented the church, mankind, or a singular person. Paul is clear, in a similar context, of who is the seed:

The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say, “and to seeds,” meaning many, but “and to your seed,” meaning One, who is Christ. (Galatians 3:16).

As to the one who crushes Satan, again, Paul is definite:

The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you (Romans 16:20).

I was uncomfortable posting Sister Lucia’s final comment, and it is true that Catholics interpret Genesis 3:15 differently than do Protestants.

The Latin Vulgate renders the Hebrew pronoun “he” as the feminine pronoun “she” (ipsa). Romish translators have so understood this since Augustine, and apply it to Mary.

St. Jerome referenced the original Hebrew text which can be interpreted as “she”, or “they” (as it reads in the Jewish Publication Society Tanakh 1917).

The New Vulgate confuses the issue by rendering the Hebrew as “it” shall bruise his head.

The Catholic interpretation is consistent with its Marian traditions, and in the overall theme of the post — a defense of marriage — I wanted to stay focused, but your point is valid and worthy of consideration.

  2. I agree with your greater point of preserving the God-ordained sanctity of marriage. The main reason society is accepting the validity of gay unions — giving them co-equal status with traditional, heterosexual marriage — is not religious, per se. But God is gradually being removed from the equation. The prevailing secular world view (scientific materialism) doesn’t consider God part of reality, as they define it. Therefore values based on belief in God are considered optional at most and irrelevant at the very least.

As the world becomes increasingly mired in the godlessness of apostasy, and we move further away from God’s Scriptural standards, the institutions that define our life become increasingly arbitrary, pointless and void of true meaning.

Those who know the truth, rejoice in your understanding, and pray for the fortitude to be good witnesses. That will make all the difference to those who have ears to hear and eyes to see. Keep the faith!
