God Defined Marriage

marriage

The Word of God:

He created them male and female, and He blessed them and named them Man in the day when they were created (Ge 5:2).

New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop V. Gene Robinson, elected in 2003 as the first openly gay (non-celibate) bishop in the Anglican Church, has retired.

Throughout his tenure Robinson used the pulpit to promote the homosexual agenda including same-sex marriage. He praised gay advocates for creating enormous confusion and holy chaos within the church:

We don’t need to win the argument, but simply change minds. This is going to end with the full inclusion of gay and lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in the church. Let me tell you a little secret: the conservatives know it, too…there is no stopping it.

Robinson compared the struggle of homosexuals with the civil rights movement of the 1960’s.

[STOP! There is absolutely no comparison with the injustice of slavery and discrimination suffered by African-Americans. To even suggest that is not only absurd, but offensive.]

Civil rights? Homosexuals are afforded civil protection in all fifty states. Civil rights are not the issue. Church membership is not even the issue. What we are talking about is the redefinition of marriage.

We heard a woman caller on the Ask Hank radio program to explain why God allowed polygamy in the Old Testament, but hated homosexuality.

If God allows anything it is because of His infinite patience with our disobedience, and God did not approve of polygamy. One of His legal precepts was that the king of Israel shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away (Dt 17:17).

[We need only examine the lives of David and Solomon to see the disruption and calamity of violating God’s instruction in this matter.]

Another caller to The Narrow Path radio program argued that no one—certainly not the Bible—should be allowed to define marriage. When asked by the host, Steve Gregg, how he would define marriage the caller said that it should be the union of two people who love each other. Isn’t the caller, then, defining marriage; and why should we accept his definition?

The institution of marriage was defined long ago; and has been a bedrock foundation of cultural and social human development for thousands of years. It is the heart and core of what God ordained—even the family.

A pastor we listen to advised Christians not to defend marriage on the basis of scripture because the opposition will simply dismiss our arguments since they don’t accept the Word of God. Well, we are not ashamed of what the Bible teaches.

Truth is an absolute. It can be twisted and distorted for the purpose of creating, as Robinson says, chaos and confusion; but for what purpose? Lies are the tactic of the Evil One.

Jesus Christ told the scribes and Pharisees:

You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father…Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies (Jn 8:44).

The serpent twisted the command of God to not eat from the tree of knowledge by sowing doubt and confusion in the mind of Eve (Ge 3:1-5).

Similarly, when the Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness He was tested forty days and forty nights by the lies and deceit of Satan. In every temptation, Christ resisted by quoting scripture.

Satan knows the Bible verse by verse, and many believers are easy prey. He appeals to the feelings and emotions of the unsuspecting who are so easily led astray by false arguments such as it is not fair that homosexuals aren’t allowed to marry. Fair?!

How many Christians are equipped to defend the faith? How many have read the Bible even once? How many sit in the pew on Sunday, but put the Bible in a drawer on Monday? How can we, then, make a case for traditional marriage and family when the opposition can so easily deceive?

Homosexuals do not want to argue the truth whether it is evidenced by nature (God’s design), or the Holy Scriptures (God’s Word). Jesus always used the evidence of nature to support Biblical truths. We need only examine the reproductive and biological design of male and female to see what God intended when He commanded Noah and his sons to be fruitful and multiply (Ge 9:7).

Certainly, two men cannot make natural use of their biology to be fruitful and multiply. Robinson says that homosexuals must fight not against homophobia but heterosexism which he equates with racism, or the idea that straight people have more value.

Homophobia? Phobia means fearful of, and we can state most assuredly that we are not afraid of homosexuals. Nor are we afraid of fornicators, adulterers, idolaters, effeminate, covetous, drunkards, revilers, or swindlers none of whom, writes Paul, will inherit the kingdom of God (1Co 6:9-10).

Such were some of you; but you were washed. but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God (1Co 6:11).

The next time you’re in church glance at the people sitting around you. They are all sinners! Robinson seems to think that homosexuals are not welcomed in the body of Christ. He uses the example of the lame beggar who was carried to the gate of the Temple which is called Beautiful where he begged for alms from the people who were entering to worship. Peter and John were coming to pray, and the beggar asked them for alms. Peter said they had no money, but he commanded the man in the name of Jesus Christ to get up and walk.

With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God (Ac 3:8).

By some convoluted interpretation Robinson equates homosexuals with the lame man suggesting that they, too, will joyously walk to the center of our churches where we suspected all along that we belonged.

Except that Robinson believes that homosexuals will be accepted just as they are; and the church will condone, even embrace, their sin and sanctify their behavior. Understand, homosexuality is not an identity it is a behavior. What did Jesus say to the woman caught in adultery? Go and sin no more (Jn 8:11).

Every follower of Jesus Christ is a repentant sinner who has been washed clean by the blood of the Lamb:

If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me (Mt 16:24).

To deny one’s self means the drunkard gives up the booze, the fornicator gives up the harlots (and, yes, having relations with your girlfriend is fornication), and the homosexual practices celibacy.

There is a false teaching within the church that we can go on sinning because we are justified by the blood of Christ. What did Paul write?

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? [Ro 6:1]

Romans 6 is a defining chapter of what it means to take up one’s cross and follow Christ. Paul teaches that our old self was crucified with Him so that we would no longer be slaves to sin but made alive in Christ Jesus.

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God (Ro 6:12-13).

Our old self is unrighteous, selfish, disobedient, rebellious and narcissistic. That is what the homosexual community wants the body of Christ to accept.

Christians are falsely labeled intolerant, bigoted and phobic, but why should we tolerate sin? If our defense is so vocal it is because the lies are even louder that subvert the resistance of the faithful.

A recent poll by the Presbyterian Church (USA) showed increasing support among its members for same-sex marriage (34% compared with 23% in 2005); while among pastors the level of support was 49% compared with 35% in the last poll. More revealing was the 75% approval of the younger adults who make up the General Assembly.

In the last election, voters of four states approved gay marriage which is now legal in eleven states. The previous thirty state ballots to legalize homosexual marriage were defeated by a majority of voters, but the trend is shifting.

Friends, this is not good news.

The woman caller on the Ask Hank radio program didn’t understand why God would disapprove of a loving homosexual relationship. It is very difficult to help someone with spiritual blinders to understand this truth—God is love, but He hates sin.

Jehovah created them male and female. He did not create Steve to be Adam’s helper. The LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for their sexual abomination.

A gay activist argued that Sodom was destroyed for its inhospitality. The Bible tells us the whole sordid story in Genesis 19. Two men (angels) visited Abraham’s nephew Lot and were welcomed into his home. When the Sodomites demanded that Lot bring out his visitors so that they could have relations with them (Ge 19:5), Lot refused and said, Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly (Ge 19:6-7). It’s unfathomable to think that Lot was being inhospitable.

In Romans we read that God gives the unholy over to the lustful desires of their flesh, dishonoring their bodies, exchanging the truth of God for a lie, and worshiping the creature rather than the Creator (Ro 1:24).

To understand that the Bible is referring to homosexuals the scripture continues:

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error (Ro 1:26-27).

The same gay activist who put a spin on the story of Lot’s inhospitality also told us that these verses in the Book of Romans are not a condemnation of homosexuality. We can only shake our heads at the deceitful arrogance and hardness of heart.

A female delegate at a Methodist conference commented that God loves and accepts homosexuals, and that Paul’s condemnation in Romans and Corinthians is not valid because it doesn’t reflect the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ who said nothing about gay marriage.

There are a lot of things Christ did and said that are not recorded in the Bible (Jn 21:25); and be mindful that the Apostle Paul spoke with the authority of Jesus.

What did Christ say about marriage? Granted, He was answering a question from the Pharisees regarding divorce, but the scripture is valid. Quoting from the Old Testament Christ said:

Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?” [Mt 19:4-5]

God’s intention cannot be interpreted any other way for He clearly established and defined what is marriage.

A homosexual neighbor, quoting from the Tanakh, insists that David had a homosexual relationship with King Saul’s son Jonathan:

Jonathan made David vow again because of his love for him, because he loved him as he loved his own life (1Sa 20:16-17).

It is mistaken to read into scripture that David and Jonathan were homosexual lovers; and it distorts the reality that King Saul hated David and would have killed him if not for the protection of Jonathan who was loyal to David even unto death.

Curious that our homosexual neighbor can quote from the Book of Samuel, but overlook the following passage in Leviticus:

You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination (Lv 18:22).

Marriage is a holy institution established by God to be the foundation of the family unit. Male and female were created to complement one another physically, emotionally and psychologically for the purpose of rearing children, and bringing them up in the ways of the LORD (Pr 22:6).

The body of Christ (or church) is referred to as His bride:

Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready (Rev 19:7).

The homosexual agenda is a direct Satanic assault on what God has ordained. Christian, put on the whole armor of God knowing that we are engaged in a spiritual battle for light and truth. Turn off the TV, study your Bible and pray that those who elect candidates who support homosexual marriage (and abortion) be convicted by the Holy Spirit.

Finally, we would like to end with the following statement issued by Pope Benedict XVI:

There is a need to acknowledge and promote the natural structure of marriage as the union of a man and a woman in the face of attempts to make it juridically equivalent to radically different types of union. Such attempts actually harm and help to destabilize marriage, obscuring its specific nature and its indispensable role in society. These principles are not truths of faith, nor are they simply a corollary of the right to religious freedom. They are inscribed in human nature itself, accessible to reason and thus common to all humanity.

Messiah Gate welcomes all sinners—even homosexuals—to the cross of Jesus. God is not partial, nor a respecter of persons (Ac 10:34). If you repent and believe that Christ died for your sins you are welcome to sit in the front row with the drunkards and fornicators and all else who have taken up their cross to go and sin no more.
